Herbal Walk at Pukekohe Food Forest

Discover the herbs growing around us

Have you ever walked past a plant and wondered whether it could actually be useful?

Join me, Kat Naran, Pukekohe naturopath and medical herbalist, for a relaxed and informative herbal walk through the Pukekohe Food Forest.

We’ll explore some of the herbs and useful plants growing around us, learn how to identify them, talk about their traditional uses, and look at simple ways herbs can be incorporated into everyday life.

You don’t need any previous knowledge of herbal medicine — just bring your curiosity and come along for an enjoyable afternoon in nature.

What we'll explore

During our herbal walk, we’ll look at a selection of herbs and plants growing in the Food Forest and talk about:

  • How to recognise and identify common herbs

  • Traditional uses of different medicinal herbs

  • Which parts of the plant are commonly used

  • Simple ways herbs can be prepared and used at home

  • Herbal teas, foods and other practical preparations

  • Some basic considerations around using herbs safely

You’ll also receive a PDF herbal guide after the walk covering the herbs we discussed, so you don’t need to remember everything on the day.

Meet Your Herbal Walk Guide

I’m Kat Naran, a qualified naturopath, medical herbalist and clinical nutritionist based in Pukekohe.

Herbal medicine is something I love because it reconnects us with something humans have used for generations — the plants growing around us.

This walk isn't about memorising dozens of herbs. It's about slowing down, looking more closely at the plants around you and beginning to understand how some of them have traditionally been used.

Whether you're already interested in herbal medicine or you're simply curious about the plants growing in your own garden and community, you're very welcome to join me.

Homeschool Herbal Workshop – Hands-on Herbal Learning

Come and join us for a hands-on morning of herbs, nature and learning in my garden in Bombay.

This workshop is especially for children who are curious about plants and would love to discover how herbs can be used in everyday life.

We’ll head into the garden together to explore, touch, smell and identify different herbs while learning about some of their traditional uses. Then we’ll turn what we’ve learned into something practical.

During the workshop, the children will get hands-on and:

  • Make their own herbal tea

  • Create a simple herbal balm

  • Learn how to prepare a traditional herbal cough syrup

  • Explore the garden and learn to recognise different herbs

Each child will also receive a PDF after the workshop covering the herbs we learned about, so they can continue exploring at home.

The workshop is best suited to children aged 6 and over. Mums are very welcome to stay, and younger siblings can come along with you too.

No previous knowledge is needed — just curiosity and a willingness to get involved.

Thursday 22 October
10:00am

$30 per child

Places will be kept limited so that everyone has the opportunity to participate and ask questions.

Come and spend a morning learning, making and discovering the wonderful world of herbs. questions.
